I look at the name on my screen in disbelief. Ornella? What does she want?

‘Yes?’

‘I’m so so sowy Decima.’

‘Don’t you start.’

‘But it’s, it’s simply so tewwibly AWful for you, Decima.’

‘What do you care?’

‘If you put it like that, Deccy, not tewwibly tewwibly, to be perfectly honest, we’ve been virtual stwangers all these years haven’t we, but Daddy’s, well, to put it mildly, he’s blown a fuse, more like a gasket actually.’

What’s a gasket? ‘Ah so he’s put you up to this. What's it about?’

‘You have to fix it, he says. We’re being made a laughing stock, Deccy.’

‘OK right, tell him I’ll kindly ask Twitter to shut down for a few weeks. There’s nothing to be done, Ornella. You have to let Twitter storms die down on their own, like real storms, until they’re forgotten.’

It all started with a Tweet.

A few lines of words scrolling past a few hundred eyes.

If that witch @CovenStar229 up in Toronto hadn’t shared it to her 135K followers, it would have been forgotten by now.

But no. The clip of my nosebleed went viral. Then it became a Gif and Scorpio started using it for his own ends, sharing it to his 14 million followers. Hoping to get traction for his crappy new song. Then every coven of bitch witches across the state hopped on. If I was a real witch, that would never have happened is what they’re saying. What’s this bitch doing screwing her guests and bringing the good name of witches down? Not like Lorelei Thornheart, there’s no real ghosts on THESE shows. Lorelei’s the #realdealwitch #notthisbitch.

So the news is out. I’m not a real witch. Then it got worse. They discovered that I’m the owner’s daughter and the vitriol went off the scale. The owner’s daughter… nepotism writ large.

The latest in the viral spiral comes from the International Union of Witch’s Rights. I’m taking the job that a real witch could and should have. So they’re challenging me to prove that I’m a witch. #proveitbitch is the hashtag. I’m keeping quiet. That’s what you do with Twitter, you let it eat you up, chew up your insides, take away what sanity you have and if you’re not dead by the end of it you pretend it never happened and carry on.

I think back to that morning. The way Scorpio was distracted, Alice coming closer and closer. It’s not @CovenStar229 though, is it, who started this? It’s that little bitch in the basement.

Now this. My scraggy sister. All fake empathy and frills.

‘I gotta go..’

‘No – wait. There’s something I wanted to share with you, Decima. There’s a weason poor Daddy’s so worked up. The thing is… OK I’ll simply say it, you know Pilot Towin?’

‘No,’ I say to wind her up.

‘Daddy’s pilot.’

‘Never met him.’

‘You know OF him surely…’ she gives a fluttery laugh.

‘What’s your point? You found true love outside daddies and teddies?’ That’s a bit of a low blow, even for me, considering my own Digby Bear is my precious fur baby.

‘We have become close, yes.
